Life is short. It would be too easy to drift through life with no meaning or purpose. There must be values in every person's life that helps him find happiness and contentment. These values shape and guide him as he make decisions and grows older. Three values that have heavily influenced my life are service, work ethic, and relationships.

The dictionary definition of service is "an act of helpful activity." Service, in my life, has become more meaningful than just an activity that aids someone and it has permeated all aspects of my life. Service is an opportunity to connect with people in a community. I think it is important to put my unique talents and skills to work for the good of everyone around me. If everyone does this, then the community's needs would be more fully met. I believe there is an aspect to service that, in the expression of my ability, shifts the focus from me to the result of the action. Service has the ability to not only change the lives of those being served, but also of those doing the service. My life has become brighter because I have allowed myself to step out of the spotlight for a moment and focus of the needs of others.

Another value I appreciate in my life is work ethic. I take pride in my work. There is nothing more rewarding to me than pouring myself into my work and knowing that I've done my best. While I allow myself room for mistakes, I hold myself to a high standard because I know what I am capable of. I appreciate the people in our society who have worked hard for what they have earned. They gain contentment out of life knowing that they put forth their best effort. They have set an example of how I want to live my life. I want to reach the end of my life and know that I have worked diligently and honestly to find success. I will not allow myself to disgrace my name by attaching it to work or effort that I am not proud of.

Finally, relationships are the foundation of life. Without relationships, my life would be jejune, lacking any flavor and excitement. I've learned the importance of relationships from my parents. We have always been a close family. They have taught me that I never have to struggle through problems alone. Not only are they always around to support me, but they also share a strong bond together. Witnessing their relationship as I grew up showed me how rewarding keeping close relationships is. I have also enjoyed my connections with friends and acquaintances. As a result of this value for relationships, I have learned to treat everyone with respect as fellow human beings with a hope that our encounters are pleasant and meaningful.

These three values have shaped who I am growing up and will continue shaping me throughout my future. They have not only brought meaning to my life, but they have given me genuine happiness.
